Patent Agent – Law Firm – Irvine, Calif.

Crowell & Moring LLP Crowell & Moring LLP is seeking a patent agent for its Irvine, Calif. office. Patent agents are integral members of the firm’s IP Practice who will work on technical assignments wherein substantial judgment and initiative are required. Such projects will vary in length and will aid in the successful prosecution of patent applications through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and foreign patent offices. Each Patent Agent is required to participate in varying aspects of the patent application process. Patent Agents work directly with attorneys in the firm and are expected to communicate effectively and efficiently with attorneys, inventors and patent examiners alike.

Responsibilities:
• Creates technical diagrams and drawings from which patent applications follow.
• Writes the patent applications with clarity and technical accuracy.
• Prepares the official correspondence with the USPTO regarding each assigned case.
• Communicates with attorneys, office staff, inventors, and patent examiners in the USPTO and foreign attorneys to aid in the prosecution of an application.
• Assists with technical issues in IP due diligence and litigation.
• Researches new client technology to determine any "new" technology.
• Travels to meet attorneys/clients/inventors to discuss inventions and/or applications.
• Reviews issued patents for attorneys to assist in patent protection.

Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or Physics Engineering with interest in intellectual property law preferred.
Large law firm experience preferred.
• 5+ years experience with Electrical Engineering or Telecom patent prosecution preferred.
• Must be independently motivated to succeed and measure success on a team level.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills and possess acute attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Each Patent Agent will participate in a patent law course and will be required to pass the United States Patent Agent Bar Exam within a predetermined amount of time.
