Why I’m Introducing Memberships
For the past 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of bringing you daily insights and analysis on patent law through Patently-O. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m deeply grateful for your continued support. I know many patent attorneys can recall instances where something they learned on Patently-O translated directly into better quality work product and client connections. Our work is important, and I’m now asking for your help to ensure Patently-O’s sustainability and growth.
Running Patently-O comes with significant costs and time investments:
- I spend tens of thousands of dollars annually on hosting, distribution, research tools, and other operational expenses. Over the past few years, these expenses have just come from my own pocket.
- Countless hours go into researching, writing, and maintaining Patently-O.
- Unlike many in our field, I (for the most part) don’t represent clients. This allows me to maintain independence and means Patently-O is my primary focus and isn’t designed to sell services.
The current situation is not sustainable and is ready for a new energy exchange model. I hope you’ll see membership as a way to promote the continuation of independent, high-quality and in-depth discussions, as well as the development of new features and content to serve our community better.
What You’ll Get as a Member
- Uninterrupted access to all Patently-O content, including in-depth analyses, case summaries, and commentary on the latest developments in patent law.
- Access to our comprehensive archive, representing over 20 years of patent law evolution (8500 posts). This resource is invaluable for tracking the development of legal doctrines, identifying trends, and building arguments.
- The ability to download key documents and access direct links to core precedents, saving valuable research time.
- A platform that continually adapts to serve the professional needs of the patent law community.
For Non-Subscribers: If you choose not to subscribe, you’ll still be able to access article previews and regular summaries. However, full access to detailed analyses, document downloads, links to core precedents, and our nuanced discussions will be reserved for subscribers.
I’m committed to keeping the membership fee low and accessible. For most of you, it will be a small business expense. If you are a law student, judge, judicial clerk, full-time law professor, or have an annual income under $75,000, please fill out this quick form and we’ll get you a no-cost membership.
Thank you for being part of the Patently-O community. I look forward to continuing our journey together in this new chapter.
Warmly,
Dennis Crouch
