Avery Dennison 
is seeking a Patent Agent to work in its Mentor, Ohio offices. The intellectual property of Avery Dennison is extremely valuable, and includes patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. This position is based in Mentor, Ohio, but the patent agent will be a member of a global team working with other team members and innovators on a global basis.
This position will provide intellectual property services to Avery Dennison, focusing on internal patent application preparation and prosecution, novelty work relating to patents, and right to market/freedom to operate searching. This position will report to the Group IP Counsel, Materials.
Responsibilities:
• Provide a full spectrum of intellectual property services including patent preparation and prosecution, monitoring, enforcement, and analysis.
• Conduct patent novelty, validity, and right to market prior art and literature searches using internal and external resources and vendors; analyze and summarize search results; and catalogue and maintain results in an organized and accessible fashion for the IP team.
• Draft patent applications and liaison with inventors and internal IP lawyers for the information needed to prepare patent applications.
• Attend to ongoing U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, including preparing responses to Office Actions received from patent office(s).
• Provide local Research and Development teams and business units with guidance related to intellectual property.
• Assist in the preparation for patent review meetings and respond to inquiries from the client base.
• Must possess a technical degree, preferably in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
• Must possess at least 1 year experience in intellectual property, including searching and prosecuting.
• Must be registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
• Familiarity with technologies relating to Avery Dennison's products.
• Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and work well in a team environment, including regular and ongoing interactions on both a global and local basis.
• Must demonstrate a high degree of ethics and values in line with Avery Dennison’s Code of Conduct.
• A working knowledge of PCT, US, and European patent practice is desirable.
• Must have strong persuasive writing skills.
