Patent Prosecution Attorney – Law Firm – Chicago, Ill.

Amin Talati Wasserman, LLP, a leading intellectual property boutique in Food, Drug, Dietary Supplement & Cosmetic Products with offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C., has an immediate need for a Patent Attorney with a specialty in Organic Chemistry or related discipline. The candidate should have 2-5 years relevant industry experience, and a Ph.D./M.S. in Organic Chemistry or related discipline is required. Candidates should have patent drafting and prosecution experience, and be capable of working on matters in most areas of chemistry, including medicinal chemistry, process chemistry, formulation chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biochemistry. Successful candidates will have outstanding writing and interpersonal skills, as well as strong academic credentials. J.D. from an accredited law school with admission to at least one state bar, and registration with the USPTO are required.

The candidate will perform all administrative tasks related to foreign and domestic patent filings, including but not limited to preparation & prosecution of patent applications, information disclosure statements, assignments, responses to office actions, amendments to claims, preparation of correspondence to foreign associates relating to foreign patent applications, conducting prior art searches for patentability and freedom to operate analyses, and analyzing and understanding patent invention disclosures and technical & scientific documents, etc.

A patent associate communicates with clients and foreign associates to ensure applications are filed accurately and timely. A patent associate carries out follow-up with attorneys and takes appropriate actions as necessary and clears daily docket and notifies docket clerk of any inaccuracies and reviews attorneys dockets for accuracy and makes sure due dates are met. A successful patent associate candidate keeps complete and accurate records in electronic format such that a complete file history is properly maintained for each case he or she is responsible.

A successful candidate’s responsibilities will include drafting and the global prosecution of patents, initiating and managing worldwide administrative patent proceedings, helping develop global IP strategies, coordinating with scientists on invention development, and educating scientists and business people on IP strategy and procedure.
