Patent Models

MousetrapBy Jason Rantanen

As every student of patent law knows, inventors were required to submit a working miniature model of their invention along with their patent application until the late nineteenth-century.  Famous models include those of such iconic inventions as the Whitney cotton gin, the Singer sewing machine, and the Morse telegraph register.  A substantial number of those models still exist, although virtually all are in private collections.

The Smithsonian Institute recently opened a a two-year exhibition of patent models from the collection of Alan Rothchild, offering everyone an opportunity to view examples of these models.  Entitled "Inventing a Better Mousetrap: Patent Models from the Rothschild Collection," the curated exhibit runs until November 3, 2013.  If you are in Washington D.C., it may be worth your while to wander over to the American Art Museum to check it out.

Bonus: the Rothchild Peterson Patent Model Museum website has a page explaining what the models are and linking to the patents themselves.

    AI, yes.  The only thing that was new was the math.  Everything else was old, and admittedly so.

    Stevens wanted to ingore the old elements.  The majority did not, because the mathematics was tied into the old process and modified it.  The modification of a physical process was the critical reason for finding the Diehr claim patent eligible.

    Ned, you’ve obviously got lots of spare time, so do everyone a favor and follow up on this. File suit against John “Shilling” Doe (in Missouri?), subpoena Dennis’ records to get obtain shilling’s identity, and expose him/her once and for all.

    Ned:

    Yes Ned there there is a battle going on.

    It is a battle between those that ;

    Support a broad interpretation of the patent laws, the historically broad scope of 101 statutory subject matter, and those that want to narrow it.

    It is a battle between those that ;

    Support a broad interpretation of “useful arts” in our Constitution and those that want to freeze inventions and technology to the state of the art in 1790.

    It is a battle between those that ;

    Support a 21st century interpretation of “processes”, in accord with modern physics and those that wish to castrate “processes” from it’s separate and independent position as a category of patentable subject matter.

    It is a battle between those that understand an invention that make a process measurably more efficient, or of higher quality, is as an invention in and of itself and is as real, valuable, and useful as a product that can be dropped on ones foot.

    It is a battle between those that ;

    Are on the side of the small independent inventor that wants to start a company and create new jobs, and those on the side of the big multinational corporations that want to steal, rap e and pillage new ideas, and stifle job growth and innovation.

    Yes Ned there is a battle and while for you it’s as simple as who is paying you to blog, for Actual Inventors it is a matter life or death.

    life or death of our businesses.

    life or death of our employees jobs.

    life or death of being able to provide for our families.

    Indeed, life or death of our dreams, the American dream

    I chose life.

    I chose America.

    What choice will you make?

    Sorry Ned, Truth is my defense and there is no libel.

    My published statement cannot harm your reputation because it is an accurate representation of the reputation you yourself have built by your constant shilling.

    Do you even recognize how poor your reputation is?

    In fact, my defense of you not being a narcissist can be said to improve your reputation. Hey , at least you are not a narcissist! You should be thanking me.

    Many, many, many people have attempted to address the crrp you post and you have chosen to continue. Thus, if there is any person to blame, that person is you.

    Way beyond acceptable? Your posting is way beyond acceptable. You’ve been told that your games are not acceptable, yet you defiantly continue to play your games “as you see fit.” Including, ironically enough your own “libeling” of others who don’t agree with you (you might check out some of your A_nger-game and A_ccuse-game posts, inwhich you falsely accuse lots of others and harm their reputations. I am sure that Simple Questions was harmed greatly when you a_ccused him of beign simple minded).

    Don’t like it? STOP POSTING.

    That. Just. Will. Not. Happen.

    The money keeps rolling in for you and your posts, amiright?

    Dennis, we really need to get rid of such libelers.  This is way beyond acceptable.

    On the other hand, Ned does not care between good and evil. At all.
    In Ned's mind, he cannot be a narcissist because he does not truly believe in what he posts. Ned believes himself to be a mercenary, not a narcissist. Now if he was to care at all at being an effective shill, the label of a narcissist might apply, but since Ned does not care if he is effective, he does not care how he looks and thus, cannot be a narcissist.
    He gets paid by the word, and just loves these multi-hundred post threads as he rakes in the bucks."

    AI, there is a difference between dialog and the self-absorbed narcissism you display.  You view this blog as some sort of battleground between good and evil.  That is just a bit bizzare, frankly.

    Ned, I dont know who what you are in real life. But that you are an online narcissist and patent blog megalomaniac remains undisputed even by you.

    So go ahead and partake in the usual attacks and hand waving. I beat you on the law and facts years ago.

    But your dismissive gestures won’t let you off the hook from commenters like Anon, Um No, and Simple Question, whose questions you have ducked, dodged, and evaded the entire year.
