Patently-O via BlackBerry

Several Patently-O readers have BlackBerry devices. These hand-held devices are great because they allow you to continue to work even when strolling on the beach, playing with your children, or participating in a departmental meeting.

I have formatted a daily e-mail feed so that it is more accessible to BlackBerry users.  The new e-mail format will include the entire text for each post from the previous day.  The e-mail is through a company called “FeedBurner.” To sign up, follow this link: http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=775893

Feedback is welcome.

It is indeed a sad commentary on our lack of civility and sense of perspective.

It is ridiculous to include participating in a departmental meeting with the other two.

A lot of useful work can be accomplished with a Blackberry while strolling on the beach or playing with your children. I have done so many times. On the other hand, no useful work has ever been accomplished at a departmental meeting.

Americans are amusing. They still consider 3-4 days out of the office a vacation even though they must check their voicemail at least twice a day and check and respond to email as often. A week vacation is a rarity in which you have to work extra hours both before you leave and when you return.

“It was clearly a JOKE. What’s disturbing is how many people didn’t get it!”

Was it a joke? I think to some it is a joke, but to many others, it is a sad commentary on our lack of civility and sense of perspective. What is disturbing is the number of people that use their electronic devices just as described. Rarely do I go to a meeting without seeing someone spending way too much time with their PDA. And, far too often I see a couple having dinner where one of the two spends almost the entire meal talking on a cell phone and not to their partner.

I’m happy to see that several of the people above seem to have gotten the joke and added on instead of posting how much it disturbed them.

Guys — Hello! It was clearly a JOKE. What’s disturbing is how many people didn’t get it!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that found this statement disturbing.

But I enjoy thumbscrolling through HTML drivel, the “friends,” the historical links, and, of course the Sputnik sized picture of Dennis. Why would I want to miss all that exercise and fun?

Sorry, son, I did not see you hit your first Little League home run as I was busy answering my e-mail. … I’ll watch the replay on wireless youtube.

    Comedy gold.

    You’re joking, right? Right??

Each of the examples you give is profoundly wrong, each in its own way.
