Director, Intellectual Property – Law Firm – Alexandria, Va.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC is searching for a Director of Intellectual Property. This position can be located in Alexandria, VA, Philadelphia, PA or Pittsburgh, PA.

This position will direct the day-to-day operations of the Section and practice groups; play a prominent role in the execution of the Section strategic plan and lateral hiring; provide financial management and business planning; and provide workload management of Associates and Paralegals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Analyze IP Section practice performance and search for avenues to increase section and practice group efficiency and profitability. Perform detailed analyses of all financial reports for Section. Investigate as necessary, information contained on the reports for clarification or problem solving.
  2. Review and analyze the monthly financial reports prepared by the Accounting Department and recommend corrective action as required. Provide recommendations on how to improve Section performance and implement recommendations. Prepare any ad hoc financial analyses requested by the Section Leadership or Practice Group Leaders.
  3. Participates in the development of the Section and practice group business development plans with Section Leadership, Practice Group Leaders and the COO. Assist Practice Group Leaders with implementation of Group Business Plans.
  4. Assess and keep abreast of the hiring needs of the Section. Assist with due diligence process for lateral recruiting, working in concert with firm-wide Director of Legal Recruiting and Development.
  5. Work with Section Leadership, Practice Group Leaders, COO and other administrative managers to develop and implement business process improvement programs. Serve as the principle liaison with Business Development and Marketing, Information Systems, Finance and Human Resources.
  6. Facilitate communication between Section Leadership and members of the Section. Serve as a sounding board and bring issues to the attention of management.
  7. Monitor and assist in directing the work flow and assignments for Associates and Paralegals of the Section. Monitor Paralegal and IP Section overtime.
  8. Direct administration of Associate, Paralegal and IP Managers evaluation process by generating and distributing forms, obtaining evaluations for HR, preparing summary of evaluation, and scheduling and attending necessary meetings. Evaluate staff performance, as assigned.
  9. Support the Section and Practice Group Leaders in implementing the Attorney and Paralegal business development plans. As needed, serves as a liaison with the Director of Legal Recruiting and Development in coordinating in-house continuing legal education programs, marketing programs and other professional development activities.
  10. Assist in the recruiting for Paralegal and IP Manager job openings.
  11. Implement the strategic plan and overall goals of the Firm within the IP Section.
  12. Assist with the annual budgeting, preparation of Section plans, and Section progress reports.
  13. Attend and participate in Section events such as Section retreat, lunch meetings, Shareholder and Associate meetings, practice group leadership meetings, holiday parties and client receptions.
  14.  Assist in coordination of conflict waivers by reviewing initial determination, providing information to Firm Attorney and overseeing lateral hire conflict checks.
  15. Coordinate IP litigation technology support needs with the Director of Litigation and/or the litigation technology support group.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or equivalent related work experience
  • 4-6 years of law firm management experience.
  • Experience with and knowledge of common legal practices primarily in IP and IP Litigation.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing budgets.
  • Previous supervisory experience and management of workflow of professional employees.
  • Previous leadership and management experience.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills.
  • Ability to write, read, interpret business documents.
  • Strong financial analytical ability. Ability to work with advanced mathematical concepts (probability, percentages, ratios)
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
  • Strong computer skills, preferably MS Office Suite and litigation specific applications.
  • Ability to travel as required.
