Berry Plastics Corporation 
is a market-leading, publicly traded, global manufacturer and marketer of value-added plastic consumer packaging and engineered specialty materials. Berry is seeking applicants for a newly created Intellectual Property Counsel position to ensure that Berry’s innovations are identified and protected. Duties for this position will primarily include supporting Berry’s vast US and international patent and trademark portfolios, conducting IP clearance, and assisting outside counsel with respect to other IP matters. Additional responsibility will include providing guidance and training on IP issues. This position will report to the Senior Intellectual Property Counsel.
Responsibilities:
- Provide counsel with respect to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and USPTO proceedings
- Work with research and development and product development teams to identify and protect Berry’s innovations
- Provide patentability and landscape searching for new product developments
- File and prosecute US and international patent and trademark applications
- Perform IP portfolio reviews
- Conduct IP clearance
- Identify and establish trade secret protocols
- Assist in IP litigation
Qualifications:
- JD from ABA-approved law school and license to practice before the USPTO
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in handling IP matters, preferably with a large firm or major corporation
- Experience with patent and trademark preparation, prosecution, and clearance
- Technical background and knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials, Plastics, and/or Manufacturing
- Proven experience identifying and protecting technologies and/or products
- Solid leadership skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, research and development teams, and outside counsel
