2014 Holiday Gift Guide for Patent Attorneys – No. 1

Boulevard-gbg-800x509

I've been biking to work almost every day this semester – usually taking my kids to school on our train but sometimes on my own. You'll note that the bike has a 36-v battery that speeds us up and down the rolling hills of Columbia Missouri and makes the 5-mile ride feel like a breeze. The result is that I get some gentle morning exercise but arrive at work ready to teach. Because Columbia has nice bike trails and easy bike parking, I the bike ride turns out to be quicker than driving. For gifting purposes, Volton does mail-order and then takes about 20 minutes to build – easy enough that any patent attorney could figure it out. [voltonbikes.com] – Dennis

Freelancers don’t list one singular reason for freelancing, the perceived advantages vary by lifestyle, market, and gender.
For example, the 2012 Freelance Industry Report reported that men
and girls freelance for different causes.

Feminine survey respondents indicated that they
choose the booking liberty and freedom that freelancing offers,
while male survey respondents indicated they freelance to check out or pursue personal passions.

Representing a customer and informing them on the legal situation is all-in
a work for lawyers. From individual situations to complete
companies, from courtroom cases to modest conflicts behind closed doors, it’s
your work to do something in your client’s best interest.

Not just caught in a courtroom, lawyrs can wokrk with criminal or civil
lawsuits, so a number of jobs can crop up. You’re representing a customer in court one-day, the following you could possibly be finalising a breakup, drawing up a
will or perhaps advising on minor legal issues.

Freelancing is also adopted by personnel who have been
laid-off, who cannot find full-time occupation, or for anyone
industries such as journalism which are relying increasingly on contingent labor rather than full-time team.

Why did you go to the electric bike? You don’t seem that old – I think you could still pound it out the old fashioned way. You’d get a good workout too. Thanks for changing the comment system.

Here’s the deal. My bike is not a substitute for other exercise but rather it is a substitute for driving to MU Law School where I teach.

Got it. Just make sure you don’t blow by someone like me as we are pounding it out to get over a hill!

“You’ll note that the bike has a 36-v battery that speeds us up and down the rolling hills…” This claim seems to be missing an element, as a battery per se wouldn’t appear to help the rider move any faster (unless it was wired to shock the rider if the speed dipped below a threshold level). Perhaps you meant it has a motor powered by a 36-V battery?

    1. 11.1

I would say that the battery is a but-for cause of the up and down speeding, along with the tires that are on wheels connected to the axles, a chain, frame, etc. and yes, a motor with power controls.

Thanks Tom – Awesome bike. As a law professor (rather than a partner at a law firm), the fact that my Volton bike is 75% cheaper made the difference.

Is this the system that sends you e-mails if someone else comments on your comments? I like that. I also like the ability to correct errors. The drawback of this system is that it is rather cumersome to switch between my real name and pseudonyms. Usually I comment on Patently-O using my own name (I guess I am one of the few), but on other fora a I don’t like to use my own name.Re biking: I am from a coutry that is almost completely flat, so everybody bikes here, even ministers. One of the deputy ministers is slightly disabled so she uses a tandem steered by an official driver. In Germany (which is also pretty flat in some areas) people used to have reservations to bike since that would give the impression that they could not afford a car (anymore), but nowadays biking is becoming more fashionable in Germany, for instance in Berlin. Even “Kanzelerin” Merkel is now involved: see http://www.mountainbike-magazi…(Translation of the statement she allegedly HAS NOT made: “biclcyle made of coal? Wonderful opportunity for the mining industry!” (coal = carbon fiber). Who said that Germans have no sense of humor?

Nice Bike Professor Crouch! And a beautiful time of year to ride in Columbia I am sure. Now, I have a patent related question(s) for the blog. Do you consider the bike patent eligible? If yes, then why is the bike patent eligible?

    Thank you
