Syngenta is seeking a Patent Attorney to work in its offices located in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Role purpose / Accountabilities
The Syngenta Patent Department is comprised of highly skilled and motivated individuals working together in a mutually supportive environment to achieve Syngenta’s business goals.
The position will involve all aspects of patent law with particular emphasis on application drafting, worldwide patent filing and prosecution, client counseling, evaluating patent validity and infringement issues, preparing and reviewing agreements and managing an IP portfolio. The position will provide IP support for and be located at Syngenta Crop Protection, LLC. in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Qualifications
Knowledge, experience & capabilities
Critical knowledge
- Juris Doctor degree
- Admitted to a State Bar
- Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- M.S. or Ph.D or equivalent experience in life sciences, preferably in Genomics, Molecular Biology, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Genetics or Biochemistry. Working knowledge of marker assisted breeding a plus.
Critical experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of life science patent experience (preferably in agricultural field drafting and prosecuting biotech and marker assisted breeding subject matter areas).
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
- Law firm, Patent Office, or in-house experience is a plus
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities
- Collaboratively formulate, implement and continually update a worldwide patent strategy for assigned company projects that is consistent with company, project and development goals.
- Develop strategies for extending patent life and exclusivity for products in development or commercialized.
- Identify potential infringement of company patents and participate in development of strategy.
- Develop filing and prosecution strategies to maximize patent protection for company projects.
- Assess company’s competitive patent position, and anticipate moves by company’s competitors.
- Ability to critically read and understand scientific literature, lab experimentation, data, results, and scientific methods
- Monitor scientific and patent literature for patentability and strategic purposes.
- Review company publications and presentations prior to public disclosure.
- Collaborate with the non-IP legal team to provide document review and legal advice on intellectual property issues.
- Provide advice on the interpretation of contracts relating to IP.
- Abide by standards for departmental patent practices. Continually seek to identify and provide input on improvements to department processes.
- Establish annual individual performance goals in collaboration with Supervisor that are consistent with company and department goals.
- Actively participate in regular development project team meetings and advise project team on IP issues.
- Foster company and department competencies and values.
- Ability to proactively identify issues, propose and implement solutions
- Ability to effectively and constructively interact with a diverse group at all levels of the organization
- Self-initiative and self-direction, ability to work independently
