1. Increasingly sophisticated designs require more inventors
2. Increasingly simple designs require more inventors
3. The perceived importance of design patents means that more employees want to “get in on the action”

Wait…maybe that slight upward trend is solely attributable to Apple and what have to be marathon design sessions for every new Apple product. Can you imagine if they came up with a new design which was more than a rectangle with curved corners? The declaration would be longer than the patent application!

LOL Have you seen some of the Apple design patents on the iPhone? IIRC, they had something like 12-15 co-inventors–on a design patent for a rectangular smartphone housing! I can’t fathom how that is possible.
