Hiroe & Associates, a leading Japanese patent and trademark boutique listed in the Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) Handbook, requires a United States Patent Attorney to live and work in central Japan. The position requires 2-5 years or more of work experience including substantial U.S. patent prosecution. Japanese language proficiency would be useful but is not required. The firm’s clients include Japanese and international clients of varying sizes in a range of technological fields.

The attorney will file and prosecute patent applications electronically with the USPTO, advise Japanese and other clients with respect to U.S. patent and trademark matters, and work with Japanese attorneys and staff to provide Japanese patent and trademark services to clients in the U.S. and elsewhere outside Japan. The attorney must be proficient in all major aspects of U.S. patent prosecution, and have substantial day-to-day working experience with the USPTO’s electronic filing system.

The attorney will attend conferences and meetings inside and outside of Japan to meet with Japanese and international colleagues to foster goodwill and pursue business development opportunities.

The firm’s offices are located in Gifu City, a medium-sized Japanese city in the greater Nagoya metropolitan area. Responsibilities:

• Reviewing, from an IP perspective, contracts, company policy documents and documents for public release, and assisting in patent analysis and due diligence investigations.
• Working with the companys Government Affairs, IP Strategy, and legal teams in the development and execution of the companys intellectual property strategy and policy advocacy programs, including interfacing with relevant branches of the Indian government and academic institutions to promote international best practices in India in relation to intellectual property including patents, designs, trademarks and copyrights, in relation to competition/anti-trust legislation and in relation to standards.

Candidates will be a Registered India Patent Agent, licensed to practice Indian law, or a US Patent Attorney and have at least 5 years intellectual property experience in a law firm or an in-house department. Candidates are expected to be self-motivated, able to work independently and demonstrate skills in interviewing engineers, preparing patent specifications and prosecuting patent applications in both domestic and foreign settings.

Responsibilities:
Successful candidate required to:
• Advise PolyU’s staff and students on patent applications, strategies and other forms of intellectual property protection
• Conduct patent search, prepare patent applications, professional response to office actions and patent annuity payment, and provide reminding services
• Render patentability and non-infringement opinions
• Provide services on patent litigation and administrative resolution of patent disputes
• Conduct talks/seminars on intellectual property
• Supervise clerical staff.

Requirements:
Applicants should have the following:
• Recognised university degree, preferably in Law and/or Science
• Qualification of being a Registered Patent Attorney by examination
• At least eight years of experience in a related field, including proven experience in the preparation of all forms of intellectual property applications
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• An excellent command of English.

Preference will be given to those with good command of Chinese, including Putonghua.
