Ideal candidates will be embedded in various R&D teams throughout SolarCity as they bring new energy products to market. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Primary responsibilities include identifying patentable inventions and preparing and prosecuting patent applications. Other responsibilities include client counseling, IP training, third-party IP investigations, due diligence, and managing outside counsel.

At least one attorney will support SolarCity’s software engineering, system design, and power systems teams, which are based in San Mateo & San Francisco, CA. The role will focus on photovoltaic system design and optimization, monitoring and maintenance of energy generation and consumption, solar financing, smart energy storage, and distributed power.

At least one attorney will also support our Silevo team, based in Fremont CA, a solar technology and manufacturing company that recently joined SolarCity. The role will focus on solar cell design, fabrication, and module manufacturing and support our new 1 GW plant, which is under construction in New York.

Qualifications

5+ years of legal experience (with at least 3 years at a law firm) as a patent attorney.
Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
Excellent customer service skills required
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, physics and/or computer science.
Must have prepared and prosecuted at least 40 original patent applications, including a substantial number in the area of (i) semiconductor device physics or (ii) electrical and software-based technologies.
Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently, manage multiple projects at once, follow through, and meet deadlines.
Common sense, great judgment, drive, a passion for solar energy, and a good sense of humor.
