Technology Commercialization Management

The Director is expected to manage a portfolio of cases.
CTC Team Leadership
Assist Technology Managers and Technology Associate with: technology triage and assessment, marketing assessments and strategies, patent strategy and prosecution support, drafting and negotiating agreements. The creation and implementation of best practices and standard operating procedures as they relate to technology management in the CTC. Forming and leading teams in the creation of: standardized workflow processes (e.g. disclosure evaluation and triage), standard operating procedures for comprehensive technology management, and technology pipeline management tools. Provide the strategic direction, operational guidance and leadership to the CTC in evolving a technology transfer strategy that will bring the office to the forefront of academic technology transfer. Add value through strategic thinking and applying negotiating skills, education, experience, and professional relationships to produce favorable transactions. Continually evaluate the technology portfolio and provide recommendations to improve the portfolio for greatest commercial return.
Collaboration
Engage and assist the faculty, collectively and individually, in determining the appropriate balance of research that has the potential for commercialization versus traditional extramural funding. Oversee the process coordinating all activity relating to technology transfer including: Invention Disclosures, Patents, Option and License Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, Research Collaboration Agreements and Commercial Non-Clinical Research Agreements. This process will include the institutional review of legal and business issues of proposed transactions.
Organizational Relationships
Work closely with the Office of General Counsel on all legal matters related to technology transfer, including the review of all CTC contracts and agreements. Work closely with Business Development on the business terms of licensing agreements and start-up companies. Develop a standard process for invention assessment, patent and market analysis, patent filing and prosecution and agreement negotiation, execution and maintenance. Work with all employees, but especially faculty and investigators, to identify innovations, commercial opportunities and funding possibilities, and establish formal working relationships with industry and other partners.
Business and Operational Management
Develop and maintain policies, processes and procedures regarding all aspects of technology transfer. Assure the internal integrity of all processes and develop new procedures and policies as appropriate. Develop training and educational seminars relating to technology transfer to benefit investigators and other interested parties. Direct the daily activities of the Technology Managers and Technology Associate through individual actions and through delegation of responsibilities. Assure that the intellectual property policy is being followed throughout the institution. Identify service areas, plan approaches for improvement activities, design new processes with specifications and expectations against which success can be measured, systematically measure collected data, assess performance over time, improve and redesign processes based on the evaluation, and reassess continuously.
Staff Management
Manage the selection, development, motivation, evaluation and discipline of Technology Managers and Technology Associate. Train assigned staff in the practice of technology transfer and technology management. Schedule and lead meetings as necessary to improve and maintain performance of Technology Managers and Technology Associate. Build and foster relationships between Technology Managers and Technology Associate with Business Development, Marketing and Operational staff within the CTC. Assignment and review of case portfolios. Delegation of divisional embedding assignments. Provide supervision of assigned staff for carrying out department goals and objectives and medical center mission and values. Prepare and present annual performance evaluations. Make job requirements and goals for each position clear to employees and provide sufficient training to achieve the desired level of competency; document evidence of competence on an annual basis. Ensure that services and consultation are regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of Cincinnati Children's patients as determined by the medical staff. Maintain accurate records of time worked by staff and ensure appropriate coverage as required by the department.
